Kiriyu Velorn
- One of a litter of three: Taren, Kiriyu, Jareth
- Hometown: Northern Freehold
- Mother: Kirie (KEYE-ree) – City furbin
- Father: Jeran – Country furbin
- Name is a diminutive form of mom’s name: KEYE-ree-you
- Kiriyu’s mother had been settled in the Northern Freehold area, as that was one area that still welcomed non-humans in the political turmoil with Servosa. Mother frequently traveled to other lands, as she was an adventurer herself. On one trip to Narfel she spent some time traveling in the company of several other furbins and in the company of one rather attractive male in particular, Jeran. When she later returned to the Northern Freehold she discovered she was expecting offspring.
- Kiriyu’s mother gave birth to three cubs: Taren, Kiriyu, and Jareth. Her two brothers remained with them until early adolescence when they asked to return to the Last Great Forest to join their father’s pride. Kirie, preferring to remain close to the human cities, took her three cubs to their homeland to allow them to see if they would prefer the wilderness lifestyle over the adventurer’s life. Kiriyu found the wilderness less to her liking, though she maintains cordial relations with her father and brothers.
- Kiriyu was raised in the traditions of the City Furbin because her mother spent so much time traveling as an adventurer that the young cub saw little of the Last Great Forest or of many furbin at all. She came to know the other races better than her own while she was growing up.
- Feeling isolated from her peers, she took to wandering the wilderness near home and exploring. Because home was in the foothills of mountains generally, caves became the natural target of her explorations. There she was able to hone some of her natural feline grace and agility as she acquired a knack for handling problems both geologic and animalian.
- She was trained by her mother and her mother’s adventuring companions in the ways of stealth. A halfling in her mother’s party saw the dexterity the cub possessed and began training her in the fine manipulations that it took to open locked treasures and disarm traps.
- Near the end of the war with Servosa, Kiriyu became bored with traveling with her mother’s group and spent more and more time wandering the caves and the countryside alone. It was during this time that she discovered what appeared to be an ancient battleground that had been partly unearthed due to a recent rockslide shifting a massive amount of land down a ravine. Among the skeletal remains were battered bits of armor and weaponry, mostly in terrible condition. Sifting through these curiously, she found one shield that had furbin script etched on its face. Though she had not learned to read the script, and thus had no idea what the shield said at the time, she recognized the shapes of the letters and decided to take it with her. The shield itself wasn’t much to look at, though it retained enough durability that it might be usable if not strained too hard. A good portion of the message in furbin had been abraded and was missing from the shield, but the piece that remained that Kiriyu was able to have someone read to her said, “ Courage against … … … onor forg… … … fre… ”
- Kiriyu decided that she would search for information that might help her learn about the missing text that encircled the shield and the bearer of that shield. What caused the battle that left the shield’s bearer with the dead on the field, and why was no one able to provide a decent honoring after the deaths?
